Woodworking bed plans, in general, all woodworking plans, should include the following 5 ingredients:
- Materials List - Lists what will be needed to build a bed, which will help you determine what you will need to buy before getting started.
- Measured Drawings or Pictures - Shows the bed from a few different angles and in general lists the dimensions of each part.
- Templates - These are handy if you need to construct more than one copy of a particular part. For example, if the head and footboard are the same, bed rails, feet of the bed, and so forth.
- Procedures List - Helps to track what needs to be done from start to finish.
- Cutting List - This shows where to cut your parts from a board or sheet of plywood. It shows the quantity, and size of the wood needed for each part of the bed and it's rough (before milling) and finished dimensions.
If you can draw up every step of the cutting and assembling process without plans, that is great! But, if you are like me and cannot just build projects on the fly, then you should have a detailed set of plans with which to work.
Additional Tip
After you have found the perfect set of plans for your bed, make sure to read the instructions in their entirety. Studying them before beginning will allow you to gather all the materials and tools required.
There is nothing more frustrating than breaking your concentration and having to put your project on hold because you are missing a much-needed tool.
